John Poulett, 1st Earl Poulett (born around 1668 – died May 28, 1743) was an important English nobleman. He was known as an "Earl," which is a high rank in the British peerage system. About John Poulett's Life
John Poulett was the son of John Poulett, 3rd Baron Poulett and his mother, Susan Herbert. Her father was Philip Herbert, 5th Earl of Pembroke. John Poulett was a big supporter of Thomas Gibson. Gibson was a famous artist in the 1700s. Being a "patron" meant that John Poulett helped Gibson with money and support. This allowed the artist to create his beautiful paintings.
His Family and Children
John Poulett got married on April 14, 1702. His wife was Bridget Bertie. She was the granddaughter of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey. John and Bridget had several children together:
- John Poulett, 2nd Earl Poulett (1708–1764) was their oldest son. He inherited his father's title.
- Peregrine Poulett (died 1752) became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected to represent people in the government. He represented the town of Bridgwater.
- Vere Poulett, 3rd Earl Poulett (1710–1788) also became an Earl later on.
- Anne Poulett (1711–1785)
- Bridget (1702–1773) married John Pollexfen Bastard.
- Catherine Poulett (died 1758) was the mother of John Parker, 1st Baron Boringdon (1735–1788). He lived at Saltram in Devon.
