The John Quincy Adams and Elizabeth Young House is a very old home built in 1869 in Oregon, America. It is also known as the John Quincy Adams Young House. This special house is a type called a saltbox house.

You can find it in the Cedar Mill area of Washington County, Oregon. This area is close to the city of Portland. The house is so important that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as a significant historical building.

The Young Family & Cedar Mill History

John Quincy Adams Young and his wife, Elizabeth Young, moved to this area in 1862. They first built a simple log cabin to live in. Later, in 1869, they built this new house. They even built another, bigger home in 1873.

John Quincy Adams Young was an important person in the community. He became the first postmaster of Cedar Mill in 1874. A postmaster is the person in charge of a local post office. He chose the name "Cedar Mill" for the community. He named it after the many cedar trees there and a mill he partly owned.

The 1869 house, which is the subject of this article, was where the post office was located. The Young family lived in their newer home across the road. John Quincy Adams Young continued to be the postmaster until 1882.

Protecting a Historic Home

Today, the John Quincy Adams and Elizabeth Young House is owned by the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District (THPRD). They have owned the house and about half an acre of land around it since 2005.

The house was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. This listing helps protect the house and its history. In 2012, a group called the Friends of the John Quincy Adams Young House started working to save it. They asked THPRD for money to fix the house's foundation. This group also worked hard to raise money to fully restore the home. Their goal is to fix it up so that people can visit it in the future.
