Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Rede (sometimes spelled Reade) was an important English politician and a member of the royal court staff. He lived from before 1509 until September 27, 1557. He even helped teach Arthur, Prince of Wales, who was the son of King Henry VII of England.

John Rede's Early Life and Work

John Rede was born sometime before the year 1509. He had an important job at the royal court. In 1530, he became the "keeper of the wardrobe" at York Place. This meant he was in charge of the royal family's clothes, jewels, and other valuable items.

Later, in 1533, he moved to Westminster and continued this role until he passed away in 1557. It was a trusted position, showing he was close to the royal household.

Serving in Parliament

In 1547, John Rede was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Westminster. An MP is like a representative who helps make laws and decisions for the country. This shows he was involved in the government and had a voice in important matters.

Family and Community Role

John Rede was married two times. His first wife was Joan, who was the widow of John Trower. Later, he married Alice Bentley, who was the widow of Richard Mody.

Besides his work for the royal family and in Parliament, John Rede was also active in his local community. He served as a churchwarden at St Martins-in-the-Fields church from 1542 to 1544. A churchwarden helps manage the church's affairs and property. He was later buried at the same church.
