Sir John Rivers (died 27 February 1584) was an important businessman during the Tudor period in England. He rose to become the Lord Mayor of London, a very high position in the city's government.

Who Was Sir John Rivers?

Sir John Rivers was a successful person from the Tudor era. This was a time in English history when the Tudor family ruled, from 1485 to 1603. He was known for his work in business and his service to the city of London.

Early Life and Family

John Rivers was the son of Richard Rivers. His father worked as a steward for Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham. A steward managed the Duke's lands and money. Sometimes, his name is spelled "John Ryvers."

John Rivers married Elizabeth Barne. She was the daughter of another important person, Sir George Barne (died 1558). John and Elizabeth had a son named Sir George Rivers. This son later became a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country.

John Rivers also had a connection to St. Mary's Church, Hadlow in Kent. He was a "lay rector" there, which meant he had certain rights and duties related to the church, even though he wasn't a priest. His grandson, also named John Rivers, was given a special title called a baronet in 1621. This family title lasted for many years, until 1870.

A Career in London

Sir John Rivers was a "grocer" by trade. In his time, a grocer was a merchant who sold many different goods. This included spices, sugar, and other valuable items. He was also a member of the Worshipful Company of Grocers. This was a powerful group, or "guild," for grocers in London. Guilds helped control trade and supported their members.

Serving the City

John Rivers held several important jobs in London's government:

  • He was the Sheriff of London from 1565 to 1566. The Sheriff was a key official who helped keep law and order.
  • He became the Lord Mayor of London in 1573. This was the highest position in the city. He served for one year, until 1574.
  • After his time as Lord Mayor, he was made a "knight" in 1574. This meant he received the title "Sir."
  • From 1580 to 1584, he was the President of St. Thomas' Hospital. This hospital provided care for sick people in London.
  • He also served as an "Alderman" for different parts of London. An Alderman was a senior member of the city council. He represented areas like Farringdon, Broad Street, and Walbrook.

Sir John Rivers passed away on February 27, 1584. He is remembered for his successful business career and his many years of service to the city of London.
