Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John James Robertson (born May 23, 1898 – died October 6, 1955) was a Scottish politician. He was a member of the Labour Party. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1945 to 1951. An MP is a person chosen by voters to represent them in the country's main law-making body, called Parliament.

Robertson was born in Shetland, a group of islands north of Scotland. He became an MP for the first time in the 1945 general election. He represented an area called Berwick and Haddington.

What is a Member of Parliament?

A Member of Parliament, or MP, is like a representative for a specific area. People in that area vote for the person they want to speak for them in the House of Commons. The House of Commons is the main part of the UK Parliament. It is where MPs meet to discuss laws and important issues for the country.

Robertson's Time in Parliament

After some changes to the voting areas, called "boundary changes," Robertson was elected again. This happened in the 1950 general election. This time, he represented a new area called Berwick and East Lothian.

However, in the next election, the 1951 general election, he lost his seat. This means he was not re-elected. The person who won instead was William Anstruther-Gray. He was a candidate from the Unionist party.
