John Russell (born 1795 – died 1883) was an English parson, which is a type of church leader. He was known for being a big fan of fox hunting and a skilled dog breeder.

Russell is famous for developing two types of dogs: the Jack Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier. Both of these dog breeds are part of the larger Fox Terrier family.

Early Life and Education

John Russell was born on December 21, 1795, in Dartmouth, a town in Devon, England. He was the oldest son of John Russell and Nora Jewell.

He attended several schools, including Plympton Grammar School and Blundell's School. Later, he studied at Exeter College, Oxford university.

Developing the Jack Russell Terrier

A famous story says that while at Oxford, Russell saw a small white terrier dog. This dog had dark tan spots around her eyes, ears, and on her tail. She belonged to a local milkman.

Russell bought the dog right away and named her "Trump." Trump became the first dog in a special line of terriers. These dogs were bred to help with fox hunting. They were good at digging out foxes from their dens. This is how the dogs became known as Jack Russell Terriers.

Russell was also one of the people who helped start The Kennel Club. This organization sets standards for dog breeds. He helped write the rules for the Fox Terrier (Smooth) breed. He was a respected judge at dog shows. However, he didn't show his own fox terriers. He felt his dogs were more like "wild flowers" compared to the "cultivated" show dogs.

Life as a Church Leader

In 1832, John Russell became the vicar of Swimbridge in North Devon. A vicar is a type of priest in the Church of England. He served in this role for 40 years.

In Swimbridge, a local pub was even renamed the "Jack Russell Inn" in his honor. He was also a rector, another type of church leader, in Black Torrington. Russell had a busy social life and was active in his community.

Family Life

In 1826, John Russell married Penelope Incledon-Bury in Swimbridge. She was the daughter of Vice-Admiral Richard Incledon-Bury. Her family owned a large estate called Colleton.

Russell was known for having expensive hobbies, especially related to hunting. These hobbies used up a lot of his wife's money.

Death and Burial

John Russell passed away on April 28, 1883. He was buried in the churchyard of St. James's Church in Swimbridge. This was the church where he had served as vicar for four decades.
