John Smeallie Youngs (born August 25, 1949), known as John Savage, is an American actor. He became famous in the late 1970s for playing thoughtful characters. Some of his well-known films from that time include The Deer Hunter (1978), The Onion Field (1979), and Hair (1979). On television, he played Donald Lydecker in Dark Angel (2000–2002). He also appeared as Hack Scudder in Carnivàle (2003–2005).
Early Life and Education
John Smeallie Youngs was born in Old Bethpage on Long Island, New York. This was on August 25, 1949. His parents were Muriel Vanderveer and Floyd-Jones Youngs Jr. John's younger siblings, Gail (born 1952) and Jim Youngs (born 1956), are also actors. His younger sister, Robin Young, is a journalist and news broadcaster. She has won a Peabody Award for her work.
After finishing his studies at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, John Savage worked. He was part of the Manhattan's Children's Theatre Group.
Acting Career Highlights
John Savage has acted in over 200 movies. He has also had many roles in TV shows. One of his first important roles was Claude Hooper Bukowski in the 1979 film Hair. His first big movie role was Steven Pushkov in The Deer Hunter (1978). This film won many Academy Awards. He also had a main role in the 1979 movie The Onion Field.
In the late 1970s, he performed on Broadway. He was in David Mamet's play American Buffalo.
In 1991, he starred in Italian director Lucio Fulci's last film, Door to Silence. He had a small role in the 1998 war film The Thin Red Line. In 1999, he played Captain Ransom in two episodes of Star Trek: Voyager called "Equinox". He also had a repeating role as Donald Lydecker in the TV series Dark Angel from 2000 to 2002.
From 2003 to 2005, Savage played Henry Scudder in the HBO TV series Carnivàle. He also appeared in two different shows from the Law & Order franchise. In 2004, he was in the Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode "Conscience". In 2005, he was in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Quarry".
Savage appeared in the 2015 horror film Tales of Halloween. He was also in the 2017 film In Dubious Battle. In 2017, he appeared in the TV show Twin Peaks.
In 2017, John Savage spoke at an event honoring director Richard Donner. This event was held by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2018, he appeared on the TV show Goliath. That same year, Savage's voice was featured on the song "This Town" by Steve Smith of Dirty Vegas.
Personal Life
John Savage has two children with his first wife, Susan. They divorced in 1969. One of their children is actress Jennifer Youngs, born in 1969. He was married to South African actress Sandi Schultz from 1993 to 2002.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Savage was an activist against apartheid in South Africa. He became friends with Nelson Mandela. He helped Mandela be part of the 1992 film Malcolm X, directed by Spike Lee. Savage was an assistant production manager for the South Africa part of that film.
Savage's former brother-in-law was actor Robert Duvall. Robert Duvall was married to John's sister, Gail Youngs, from 1982 to 1986.
