John Smeallie Youngs (born August 25, 1949), known as John Savage, is an American actor. He became famous in the late 1970s for playing sensitive characters in movies. Some of his well-known films from that time include The Deer Hunter (1978), The Onion Field (1979), and Hair (1979). On TV, he played Donald Lydecker in Dark Angel (2000–2002) and Hack Scudder in Carnivàle (2003–2005).

Early Life
John Smeallie Youngs was born in Old Bethpage, on Long Island, New York, on August 25, 1949. His parents were Floyd and Muriel Youngs. John Savage has two younger siblings, Gail and Jim Youngs, who are also actors. His younger sister, Robin Young, is a famous journalist and news reporter.
After finishing school at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, John Savage worked with the Children's Theatre Group in Manhattan.
Acting Career
John Savage has acted in more than 200 movies, short films, and TV shows. One of his first big roles was as Claude Hooper Bukowski in the 1979 movie Hair. This film was a musical. His first major movie role was as Steven Pushkov in the 1978 film The Deer Hunter. This movie won many Academy Awards. He also had a main role in the 1979 film The Onion Field.
In the late 1970s, he performed in a Broadway play called American Buffalo. It was written by David Mamet.
Later, in 1991, he starred in the Italian movie Door to Silence. He also had a small part in the 1998 war movie The Thin Red Line. In 1999, he played Captain Ransom in two episodes of the TV show Star Trek: Voyager. From 2000 to 2002, he was Donald Lydecker in the TV series Dark Angel.
John Savage also appeared as Henry Scudder in the HBO TV series Carnivàle from 2003 to 2005. He was also in two different shows from the Law & Order series. These were Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
More recently, Savage appeared in the 2015 horror film Tales of Halloween. He was also in the 2017 movie In Dubious Battle. In the same year, he appeared in the TV show Twin Peaks.
In 2017, John Savage spoke at an event honoring director Richard Donner. This event was held by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2018, he appeared on the TV show Goliath.
Personal Life
John Savage has two children with his first wife, Susan. One of his children, Jennifer Youngs, is also an actress. He was married to South African actress Sandi Schultz from 1993 to 2002.
During the 1980s and 1990s, John Savage was an activist against apartheid in South Africa. Apartheid was a system of unfair racial segregation. He became friends with Nelson Mandela, a famous leader who fought against apartheid. John Savage helped Nelson Mandela be part of the 1992 movie Malcolm X.
