John Scrymgeour, 1st Viscount of Dudhope facts for kids
John Scrymgeour (died 7 March 1642 or 1643) was an important Scottish politician. He was known as the 1st Viscount of Dudhope.
John Scrymgeour took over from his father, James Scrymgeour, in 1612. He became the hereditary Constable of Dundee. This meant his family had the important job of keeping order in the town of Dundee. He also became the Standard Bearer of Scotland. This was a special role where he carried the King's flag in important ceremonies.
John Scrymgeour was a member of the Scottish Parliament. He represented the area of Forfarshire in 1612, 1617, and 1621. Later, he represented Argyllshire from 1628 to 1633. On 15 November 1641, he was given the special titles of Viscount of Dudhope and Lord Scrymgeour. These titles would pass down to his male family members.
Family Life
John Scrymgeour married Margaret Seton. She was the daughter of David Seton of Parbroath. They had several children, including:
- James Scrymgeour, who later took over his father's titles.
- Magdalen Scrymgeour, who married Alexander Irvine of Drum.
- Mary Scrymgeour, who married Peter Hay of Megginch.
Margaret Seton, also known as Lady Dudhope, was a good friend of Jean Drummond, the Countess of Roxburghe. The Countess visited John and Margaret at Dudhope Castle in 1619. John Scrymgeour even bought a pair of pistols as a gift for the Countess's husband from a gunsmith in Dundee.
