John Scudamore (1540-1623), of Holme Lacy, Herefordshire, by English School of circa 1590
John Scudamore, a key figure in Queen Elizabeth I's court.

John Scudamore was born on February 1, 1542, and passed away on April 14, 1623. He was the oldest son of William Scudamore and Ursula Pakington. Sadly, his father died early. Because of this, John became a "ward" of Sir James Croft. This meant Sir James Croft was responsible for looking after John and his property until he was old enough.

John Scudamore married Sir James Croft's daughter, Eleanor Croft, around 1563.

Serving the Queen

When Sir James Croft became a very important official called the Comptroller of the Household in 1570, John Scudamore also joined the royal court. Even though his wife had passed away by then, he became a "Gentleman Usher" to Queen Elizabeth. This role meant he helped guide people and manage events at the palace. He also became the "Standard Bearer" for the Honourable Band of Gentleman Pensioners, who were like the Queen's personal bodyguard.

Important Roles in Herefordshire

John Scudamore held many important jobs in his home county of Herefordshire. In 1574, he became the Custos Rotulorum of Herefordshire. This was a very important role, making him the chief keeper of the county's records and the head of the local justice system.

A year later, in 1575, he was made a deputy lieutenant. This meant he helped the main lieutenant manage the county's military forces. In 1581, he served as the High Sheriff of Herefordshire, a role that involved maintaining law and order.

Representing Herefordshire in Parliament

John Scudamore was also chosen to represent Herefordshire in the English Parliament. He was elected as a "knight of the shire" six times. He served continuously from 1571 to 1589, and then again in 1597. This shows he was a trusted and respected leader in his community.

John Scudamore's Family Life

John Scudamore married a second time to Mary Scudamore. She was the daughter of Sir John Shelton and was a member of the Queen's "privy chamber." This meant she was very close to Queen Elizabeth and could speak directly with her. Because of her close connection to the Queen, Mary Scudamore was considered more influential than her husband.

After Sir James Croft passed away in 1590, John Scudamore's influence at court became less strong. His main heir was his second son from his first marriage, named Sir James Scudamore. Sir James's own son later became a very important noble, known as John Scudamore, 1st Viscount Scudamore. John Scudamore's oldest living son, also named John Scudamore, became a priest in Rome in 1592.
