Sir John Shaw (born around 1617 – died 1690) was an English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the government, between 1659 and 1679.

Shaw's father was John Shaw of Colchester, and his mother was Mary Lufkin. His father was an important local official called an alderman. He supported the King's side, known as the Royalists, during the English Civil War.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1659, Sir John Shaw was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Colchester. This happened during a time called the Third Protectorate Parliament.

Re-elected for Colchester

He was elected again as an MP for Colchester in 1660 for the Convention Parliament. He was also re-elected in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. Sir John Shaw continued to serve as an MP until 1679.

Other Important Roles

In 1660, Shaw took on another important job. He became the Recorder of Colchester. A Recorder was a legal officer, often a judge, in a town or city. This happened when his father got his alderman rank back.

Knighted by the King

Sir John Shaw was given the special title of "Sir" when he was knighted. This ceremony took place at Whitehall on 24 September 1661. Being knighted was a great honor given by the King.

Sir John Shaw married Thamar Lewes in 1643. They had several children together.
