John Sibthorpe (1669–1718) was an English politician from Lincoln. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the early 1700s. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in a country's parliament.
Early Life and Education
John Sibthorpe was born in 1669. His father was Gervase Sibthorpe. His mother was Judith Riggall. Judith was the daughter of Mark Riggall. John went to Christ Church, Oxford for his education. Christ Church is a famous college at Oxford University.
Political Career
John Sibthorpe became a Member (MP) for Lincoln. He served in the Parliament of Great Britain. His time as an MP was from 1713 to 1715. During this period, he represented the people of Lincoln in the government.
Family Life
In 1703, John Sibthorpe married Mary Browne. Mary was the daughter of Humphrey Browne. John and Mary had four sons and one daughter.
After John's death in 1718, his wife Mary acquired Canwick Hall. This was a large estate near Lincoln.
Notable Sons
Two of John Sibthorpe's sons became well-known.
- Coningsby Sibthorp: His son, Coningsby Sibthorp, also became an MP for Lincoln. He served for many years. Coningsby was also the High Sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1733. He inherited Canwick Hall in 1727.
- Humphry Sibthorp: Another son, Humphry Sibthorp, became a famous botanist. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. Humphry even held a special teaching position in botany at Oxford University.
John Sibthorpe passed away in 1718. He was buried on April 27, 1718, at St. Mark's church in Lincoln.
