John Frederick Spinks (born November 28, 1953 – died July 9, 2014) was a talented English musician. He was a songwriter and the main guitarist for the popular band The Outfield.
About John Spinks
John Spinks grew up in London, England. In the 1970s, he played music with his friends Tony Lewis and Alan Jackman. Their first band was called Sirius B. They practiced for a while but decided to stop playing together. This was partly because a new type of music, called punk rock, was becoming popular.
Forming The Outfield
In the 1980s, John Spinks started recording some demo songs. He used the name "Baseball Boys" for these recordings. He picked this name because it sounded like a gang from the movie The Warriors. Spinks thought the name was a bit silly.
However, when he showed the demos to people, they loved the sound. They wanted to see the band, but there wasn't a real band yet! So, Spinks teamed up again with Tony Lewis and Alan Jackman. They performed together as Baseball Boys for a short time. Then, in 1984, they changed their band's name to The Outfield.
The Outfield's Success
The Outfield's first album was called Play Deep. It came out in 1985 and was a huge hit. Millions of copies were sold, making it a "multi-platinum" album. John Spinks wrote many of the band's songs.
He wrote their most famous song, "Your Love". This song became very popular in 1986. It reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band took a break in the 1990s. But they got back together to record a new album called Replay in 2011.
Later Life
John Spinks passed away on July 9, 2014, when he was 60 years old. He had been battling liver cancer for several years. He was survived by his wife, Jean Spinks, and his two children, Lee and Paul. Before he died, John and the band were working on new music. It is not known if these songs will be released.
