John Stanbridge (1463–1510) was an English grammarian and schoolmaster. A grammarian is someone who studies and teaches grammar, which is the rules of a language. A schoolmaster is a teacher, especially the head of a school.

Early Life and Education

John Stanbridge was born in Heyford, Northamptonshire, England. When he was young, he went to Winchester College, a famous school. After that, in 1480, he went to New College, Oxford, which is a well-known university. He studied there until 1486.

After leaving New College, John Stanbridge became a teacher at the new Magdalen College School in Oxford. This school had just been started by a man named William Waynflete. In 1488, John Stanbridge became the headmaster of the school after the previous headmaster, John Anwykyll, passed away.

John Stanbridge is most famous for the educational books he wrote and edited. These books helped students learn Latin and grammar during his time.

Some of his important books include:

  • Accidence (around 1505)
  • Parvulorum institutio (around 1507)
  • Gradus comparationum and Sum es fui (around 1509)
  • Vulgaria (around 1509)
  • Vocabula (1510)

These books were very important because they were among the first in England to mix new ideas about education with older ways of teaching. They helped bring a more modern approach to learning Latin, which was a very important language at the time.
