John Steadman (physician) facts for kids
John Steadman (sometimes spelled Stedman) was an important Scottish doctor and a person who loved studying old things, called an antiquary. He lived a long time ago, in the 1700s. He was also one of the people who helped start a famous group in Scotland called the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1783.
A Doctor's Life
John Steadman was born in 1710 near a town called Dunfermline in Scotland. His parents were Jean Kinnaird and Reverend John Stedman. When he was very young, his family moved to Edinburgh because his father became a minister at a church called the Tron Kirk. Sadly, his father passed away when John was still a baby.
John decided to study medicine. He went to the University of Edinburgh, which is a very old and respected university.
In 1740, John became a doctor for a famous army group called the Scots Greys. He even went with them to a battle called the Battle of Dettingen. After that, he worked as a doctor in Dunfermline. Later, he moved back to Edinburgh. There, he worked at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, which is a big hospital. He also helped as a surgeon at the Merchant Maiden Hospital. John was also an honorary professor at the University of Edinburgh, where he taught medicine.
In 1765, he received some land called Little Seggie from an uncle. This land was located north-west of a place called Milnathort.
John Steadman spent his last years living on St John Street in Edinburgh. He passed away in Edinburgh on April 16, 1791. He is buried in the Canongate Kirkyard.
His Family
In 1754, John Steadman married Margaret Wellwood, who was also known as Peggy. Her father was Robert Wellwood.
John also had an older brother named Lieutenant Colonel Robert Stedman. He lived from 1701 to 1770.
