John Stewart wrote many books about Scottish history. His works include The Stewarts: The Highland branches of a royal name, The Camerons: A History of Clan Cameron, and The Grahams.
The Camerons: A History of Clan Cameron
His 344-page book, The Camerons: A History of Clan Cameron, was published in 1971. The Clan Cameron Association released it. Colonel Sir Donald Hamish Cameron of Lochiel, who was the Clan Chief at the time, praised the book highly. He was also Stewart’s brother-in-law. Today, many Camerons think it is the best book about their clan. You can find it for sale at The Clan Cameron Museum in Achnacarry.
History of the Ardvorlich Stewarts
John Stewart also wrote a History of the Ardvorlich Stewarts. This book was about his own family. It was printed privately, meaning it was not sold to the public. Copies were not even offered to researchers. A few copies exist with the Stewart Society and the Public Library in Edinburgh. Other copies are believed to be with family members. The family keeps this book quite private. Outsiders are usually only shown certain pages from it.
John Stewart's research uncovered a lot of information. He learned about his own ancestors and other famous Scottish families and clans. He often wrote about history in a romantic way. For example, in his book The Grahams, he wrote about the Grahams of Montrose. He said they were very capable and loyal people. He noted that they rose to power slowly, based on their skills and worthiness. This was different from many others who gained power through violence or trickery.
