John Stuart (1743–1821) was an important Scottish minister and a smart scholar. He was also known as Stewart or Steuart. John helped translate the Bible into Gaelic, which is the traditional language of Scotland.

He worked on the New Testament in Gaelic, which was published in 1796. A huge number of copies, 21,500, were printed! He also led the translation of the Old Testament into Gaelic, which came out in 1801.

John Stuart's Early Life and Career

John Stuart was born on July 31, 1743. His birthplace was Killin manse, which was his family's home. His father was Reverend James Stuart, and his mother was Elizabeth Drummond.

He became a minister for the Church of Scotland. He started his work in Arrochar in 1774. Later, he moved to Weem in 1776 and then to Luss in 1777.

In 1783, John Stuart became one of the first members of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This was a big honor for smart people in Scotland. He also received a special degree from Glasgow University in 1795.

John Stuart passed away in Luss on May 24, 1821. He was buried there.

John Stuart's Work as a Scholar and Translator

John Stuart was very good at the Gaelic language. His father had already translated the New Testament into Gaelic. When his father died, he had just started translating the Old Testament.

John Stuart continued his father's important work. He finished the full translation of the Old Testament. The complete Gaelic Bible was published in Edinburgh in 1767. Another edition was printed in London in 1807.

He also helped publish the Gaelic poems of Duncan Ban MacIntyre. For all his hard work, he received money and thanks from important groups.

Stuart's Interest in Nature and Books

John Stuart was also interested in nature and plants. He studied botany at the University of Edinburgh. Botany is the study of plants.

In 1772, he traveled with a writer named Thomas Pennant. John shared facts about nature, the Gaelic language, and Highland traditions. He also helped another expert, Reverend John Lightfoot, with his book about Scottish plants.

John Stuart wrote about the area of Luss in a book called Statistical Account of Scotland. This book described different parts of Scotland.

John Stuart's Family Life

On July 24, 1792, John Stuart married Susan McIntyre. Her father was also a minister. Susan lived until 1846.

They had a son named Joseph McIntyre. He also became a minister. They also had a daughter.

John's brother-in-law was James McLagan. He was also a minister and wrote books.
