Sir John Vavasour (born around 1440 – died November 26, 1506) was an important English judge. He came from a knightly family, which means his family had a special title from the King. He studied law at a famous place called the Inner Temple in London, which is still a training ground for lawyers today.

Who Was Sir John Vavasour?

Sir John Vavasour was a respected legal expert in England during the late 1400s and early 1500s. He spent his life working in the legal system, moving up through different important roles. His career shows how someone could become a top judge in those times.

Starting His Legal Career

Sir John began his journey in law by becoming a Serjeant-at-Law in 1478. A Serjeant-at-Law was a very senior lawyer, almost like a special advisor to the courts. They were chosen from the best lawyers in the country.

Just five years later, in 1483, he was appointed a King's Serjeant. This was an even higher position, meaning he was a lawyer who specifically advised the King and represented the Crown in legal matters.

His First Judicial Roles

After these important appointments, Sir John started taking on roles as a judge. In 1485, he became the Second Justice of Lancaster. A "Justice" is another word for a judge. He worked in the legal system for the region of Lancaster. He did so well that he was promoted to Chief Justice of Lancaster in 1495, becoming the main judge for that area.

He also served as the Recorder of York starting in 1486. A Recorder was a judge who helped manage the legal affairs of a city, like York. He held this position until 1489.

Becoming a Top Judge

On October 17, 1489, Sir John Vavasour was appointed as the Fourth Justice of the Court of Common Pleas. This was one of the most important courts in England at the time. It handled many legal cases between ordinary people.

He continued to impress, and in 1494, he was promoted to Third Justice in the same court. He served in this high position until 1504. For his great service, he was knighted in 1501, which meant he received the title "Sir."

Sir John Vavasour finished his long career as a judge on October 16, 1506. He passed away shortly after, on November 26, 1506.
