John Wentworth was the only son of Sir John Wentworth. His mother was Elizabeth Heydon. The family lived at Gosfield Hall in Essex, which was a large and important estate. In 1581, his father inherited Gosfield Hall. John also had a sister named Elizabeth.
His Work in Government
John Wentworth took over his father's estates in 1588. He then began his public service.
High Sheriff of Essex
In 1592, John Wentworth was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Essex. This was an important role, like a chief law enforcement officer for the county. He served in this position until 1593.
Member of Parliament
John Wentworth also became a Member of Parliament. This meant he was part of the group that made laws for England. He represented Essex in Parliament in 1597. Later, in 1601, he represented Wootton Bassett. He didn't leave many detailed records of his work in Parliament.
Managing Family Wealth
