A Historic Landmark
The church building itself became a special landmark on October 11, 1993. This means the City of Pittsburgh recognized it as an important historic place.
Dealing with Water Challenges
Even though it was a landmark, the church faced some big problems with water. In 1994, the church had to close for a while. This happened because water from an old, abandoned mine flooded the building. This mine was huge, about 100 acres!
Smart Solutions for Flooding
The church faced flooding again in 2006. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) stepped in to help. They put in new pipes to move the mine water away from the church.
The DEP also had a clever idea. In November 2008, a special system was installed. It's called a geothermal system. This system uses the mine water runoff to heat and cool the church building. It's a really smart and eco-friendly way to use the water!
