John de Cheverston was an important English noble who lived in the 1300s. He was a brave knight and a leader. He served as the Captain of Calais and also as the Seneschal of Gascony.

John's Life and Important Roles

John de Cheverston was the son of William de Cheverston and Matilda Pipard. His family was well-known in England during the 14th century.

He held several important jobs for the English king. In 1347, he became the Captain of Calais. Calais was a very important port city in France that England controlled at the time. Being Captain meant he was in charge of defending the city.

Later, he served as the Seneschal of Gascony. This was a high-ranking official who managed the English lands in Gascony. Gascony was a region in southwestern France that belonged to England. John held this important role in 1350-1351, 1354, and again in 1362.

Battle of Saintes Victory

John de Cheverston also led English forces in battle. On April 1, 1351, he commanded the English army during the Battle of Saintes. This battle was a big victory for the English forces.

John de Cheverston passed away around 1375. After his death, his lands and properties were inherited by his wife Joan's brother, Philip de Courtenay.

John de Cheverston was married twice during his life.

His first wife was named Thomasina. They had children together, but not much is known about them.

Later, John married his second wife, Joan. Joan was the daughter of Hugh de Courtenay, Earl of Devon and Margaret de Bohun. John and Joan did not have any children together.
