John of Montfort

John of Montfort (also known as Jean) was an important figure in the Middle Ages. He was a powerful lord who ruled over different lands. He was the Lord of Toron from 1257 to 1266. Later, he became the Lord of Tyre from 1270 until he died in 1283.

John was the son of Philip of Montfort. Philip was also a very important lord, ruling over several places like La Ferté-Alais and Castres. John's mother was Maria of Antioch-Armenia. She was also a lady of Toron and had claims to the throne of Armenia.

Becoming a Lord

When John grew up, his father gave him control of the land called Toron. This was a significant responsibility for a young lord. However, a powerful group called the Mamluks conquered Toron in 1266. This meant John lost control of that land.

Marriage and New Lands

On September 22, 1268, John married Margaret. She was the daughter of Henry of Antioch and Isabella of Cyprus. Margaret was also the sister of Hugh III of Cyprus, who was the King of Cyprus. Later, Hugh III also became the King of Jerusalem.

King Hugh III wanted to make his claim to the throne of Jerusalem stronger. So, he made agreements with important noble families in the kingdom. When John married Margaret, King Hugh III confirmed that John would own Tyre. However, the king added a rule: if John and Margaret died without children, Tyre would go back to the king.

Lord of Tyre

In 1270, John's father was killed by a secret group known as the Assassins. After his father's death, John took over as the Lord of Tyre. He governed Tyre until he died in 1283.

John and Margaret did not have any children. Because of the agreement made during his marriage, the land of Tyre could have gone back to the king. However, King Hugh III allowed John's brother, Humphrey of Montfort, to become the next Lord of Tyre.
