Johnny Lira (born July 31, 1951 – died December 8, 2012) was a professional boxer from Chicago, Illinois. He was known for competing in the lightweight and welterweight divisions.

Johnny Lira's Boxing Journey

Johnny Lira began his boxing career with a big win. He won the Chicago Novice Golden Gloves championship in the middleweight category. This was a great start for him!

As a professional boxer, Johnny was very successful. He won his first 18 professional fights without a loss. In August 1978, he won the United States Boxing Association lightweight title. He achieved this by knocking out Andrew Ganigan in the sixth round. Ganigan was undefeated at the time, which made Johnny's victory even more special.

In August 1979, Johnny Lira had a chance to become a world champion. He fought for the World Boxing Association Lightweight title against Ernesto Espana. Johnny even knocked Espana down during their fight! However, he did not win the title that day.

Johnny Lira boxed professionally from 1976 to 1984. He had a strong record of 29 wins, 6 losses, and 1 draw. He also won 16 of his fights by knockout. Johnny retired from boxing at age 34 after a fight in 1984.

Life After Boxing

After his boxing career, Johnny Lira faced a big health challenge. He had surgery for a liver transplant, which helped save his life. For many years after this, he seemed to be in good health.

Johnny loved boxing and continued to be involved in the sport. He taught amateur boxing to young people at the Union League Boys and Girls Club. He also made appearances at boxing events in the Chicago area.

Johnny Lira passed away on December 8, 2012, at age 61. His brain was donated to Boston University for study. He is remembered by his four children: three daughters and one son.
