Join In! was a fun Canadian TV show for kids. It aired on TVOntario between 1989 and 1995. Jed MacKay created and produced the show. He also wrote all of its original songs.
The show won an award for Best Pre-school Program. This was from the Alliance for Children and Television. It was also a finalist three times for the Gemini Award. This award celebrates great Canadian TV shows.
Every episode of Join In! invited its audience to participate. Kids could "Join In!" with games, songs, puzzles, or stories. The actors often talked directly to the camera. This made it feel like they were talking right to you! The songs were very different from typical kids' songs. They had many rhythms and styles. The cast also sang live in every show.
Doug Williams directed the first two seasons. Wayne Moss directed the next four seasons. The show had a diverse cast. It was filmed in Lindsay, Ontario.
In the United States, Join In! aired on the Vision Interfaith Satellite Network. This was from 1990 to 1993. It also aired on TLC's Ready Set Learn block from 1992 to 1995.
Meet the Characters
The show was mostly about three adults. Their names were Jacob Bennett, Nikki, and Zack. They shared a studio apartment together. After the second season, Nikki moved away. A new character named Kia joined the group.
In a typical episode, the three friends would plan a play or a show. Nikki was usually in charge of music and sound. Jacob and Zack would handle the set, lighting, and costumes. Sometimes, a small problem would come up that they had to solve.
The show also featured some special toy characters. There was a toy wizard named Winston. He lived on a windowsill in the loft. Winston had a wife named Emmelina. They also had a dog named Abra.
