Jorge Cervós-Navarro (born January 9, 1930 – died November 14, 2021) was a Spanish scientist. He was an expert in pathology (the study of diseases), histology (the study of tiny body tissues), and neuroscience (the study of the nervous system, like the brain). He spent his life learning about and teaching others about the human body, especially the brain.

Life and Education

Jorge Cervós-Navarro studied medicine at universities in Barcelona and Zaragoza, Spain. He earned his PhD (a very high university degree) from the University Complutense of Madrid in 1956.

In 1968, he became the leader of the Institute of Neuropathology at the Free University of Berlin in Germany. He also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at that university. This means he was in charge of the medical school.

He was an important member of the International Society of Neuropathology. He also led the German Society of Neuropathology and Neuroanatomy. From 1997 to 2001, he was the Rector (the main head) of the International University of Catalonia.

Professor Cervós-Navarro wrote many important books about his field of study. These books were translated into different languages so people all over the world could learn from them.

He received many special honors called "Doctor honoris causa" from several universities. This award is given to people who have made great contributions to their field. Some of these universities include:

  • University of Zaragoza (1984)
  • University of Barcelona
  • University Complutense of Madrid
  • Leibniz University Hannover (Germany)
  • University of Tokushima (Japan)
  • University Saransk (Russia)
  • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece)

Important Works

Jorge Cervós-Navarro wrote several key books and papers during his career. These works helped other scientists and doctors learn more about the brain and its diseases. Some of his important publications include:

  • Pathology of Cerebral Microcirculation (1974): This book is about the tiny blood vessels in the brain and how diseases affect them.
  • Estudio al microscopio electrónico del ganglio raquídeo normal y después de la ciaticotomía (1979): This work uses a special microscope to study nerve cells.
  • Metabolic and Degenerative Diseases of the Central Nervous System: Pathology, Biochemistry, and Genetics (1995): This book covers diseases that affect the brain and spinal cord, looking at how they work, their chemistry, and how they are passed down through families.
  • Cerebral Microcirculation and Metabolism
  • Neuropathology and Neuropharmacology
