Early Life and Education
José Luis Gilarranz started his career helping people as a lifeguard in Madrid. While working, he also studied hard to become a nurse and then a doctor. After finishing his studies, he became a doctor for the same sports facilities where he had been a lifeguard.
Founding SAMUR
In 1990, Dr. Gilarranz had a big idea. He wanted to make emergency medical services much better and more organized. So, he founded the Servicio de Asistencia Municipal de Urgencia y Rescate (which means the Municipal Emergency and Rescue Service), known as SAMUR.
What SAMUR Does
SAMUR was created to help people quickly during medical emergencies. It also helps different emergency groups work together smoothly. Dr. Gilarranz was the director of SAMUR for many years, from 1990 until 2003. Under his leadership, SAMUR became a model for emergency services.
