José Mamerto Gómez Hermosilla was born in Madrid, Spain. His parents were Vicente Gómez and Josefa de Hermosilla. He grew up to become a very important figure in Spanish literature and journalism during his time.
His Early Education and Studies
When he was around 11 years old, in 1782, José began his studies. He learned Latin and rhetoric, which is the art of speaking or writing effectively, with a group called the Piarists in Getafe.
Later, he went to the college of St. Thomas in Madrid. There, he spent three years studying philosophy. After that, he studied for four more years at San Isidro. His studies included theology, which is the study of religious faith, Ecclesiastic Discipline, and Literature. By 1785, he was recognized as one of the many academic theologians at St. Thomas.
