From Kilómetro 50 to a New Name
The city was first called Kilómetro 50. This name came from its distance from another town, Peto. It was exactly 50 kilometers away.
In 1974, Quintana Roo became a state. At that time, the city was renamed. It got its new name from a famous Mexican hero. This hero was José María Morelos, a leader in the Mexican War of Independence. The city also became the main town for the municipality that shares its name.
