José Solé (born July 28, 1929 – died February 15, 2017) was a famous Mexican stage actor and director. His amazing career in theater lasted for over sixty years!

José Solé loved theater from a young age. He started acting in small movie parts, but his real passion was the stage. He trained in theater in Mexico and France. He worked hard to help theater grow in Mexico. He directed many plays and even led important theater groups. He received many awards for his acting and directing throughout his life.

Early Life and Training

José Solé Nájera was born in a small town called Mixcoac. Back then, Mixcoac was a quiet place with farms, outside of Mexico City.

José first discovered theater by watching a street performance in his town. He was very excited by it and decided he wanted to work in show business. When he was seven, his dad gave him a puppet theater. He loved it so much that his parents would take it away as punishment if he didn't do well in school!

He started acting by forming a theater group in middle school. Later, he played small roles in movies. He then studied theater formally at the School of Theater Arts in Mexico. In 1956, he went to Paris, France, to study directing. He also learned about designing sets for plays.

José Solé's theater career began in 1946. He continued working without stopping until he retired in 2010. In the 1990s, he had an operation on his throat. After that, he used a special device to help him speak.

Theater Career

José Solé's career in theater lasted for more than sixty years. He started as an actor, then became a director, and even designed sets and costumes. He also managed theaters and cultural groups.

His acting career on stage began in 1946. He joined the INBA Theater Company in 1948. While studying at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, he joined another theater group. They went on many tours around Mexico.

José Solé started directing plays in the early 1960s. His first play as a director was Amadeo. He also became the director of the Xola Theater (now called the Julio Prieto Theater) from 1965 to 1968. In the 1970s, Solé led the INBA Theatrical Department. This included the school where he had studied acting.

Solé helped create important cultural groups. He founded Mexico's National Theater Company. He also started the Rodolfo Usigli National Center for Theater Research. He even helped create the National Theater Show in the 1970s. From 1975 to 1977, he worked for the Mexican embassy in the Soviet Union.

José Solé began his career when theater in Mexico was facing challenges. Unlike other arts, theater didn't get much government help after the Mexican Revolution. Solé believed that all types of theater were important. He directed many different kinds of plays. These included children's plays, musicals, and even operas. He directed famous works like "La casa de Bernarda Alba" and "Otelo."

Awards and Honors

José Solé received many awards throughout his long career. Six years after he started in theater, he won the 1952 Mexican Theater Critics Association Prize for best young actor. The same group named him best actor in 1954. His first directing job also earned him a Best Direction award. Today, the prize for Best Production from the Mexican Theater Critics Association is named after him.

His first big award for his life's work came in 1997. This was at the National Theater Show, which he had helped to create. In 2008, he received the National Arts and Sciences Prize. This is one of Mexico's highest honors. He received this award at the Palacio de Bellas Arts.
