José Manuel Sulantay Silva (born April 3, 1940, in Coquimbo, Chile – died July 20, 2023, in Coquimbo) was a famous Chilean football player and coach. He is best known for coaching the Chile U20 and Chile U17 national teams. He led the Chile U20 team to a third-place finish at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada. At the FIFA level, Sulantay is considered Chile's second most successful coach after Fernando Riera.

Playing Career Highlights

José Sulantay was born in Coquimbo, Chile. He started his official football career with Deportes La Serena in 1957. He was known for playing as a right back or right wing.

His skills led him to be called up to the Chilean national U-20 team. This team played in the 1958 South American Youth Championship held in Chile.

In 1959, his team, Deportes La Serena, lost the 1959 Copa Chile final. However, in 1960, he helped them win the Copa Chile title. He was also a top scorer in the 1959 Copa Chile, scoring six goals.

Managerial Career

José Sulantay had a long and successful career as a football manager. He coached many teams in Chile.

Early Coaching Years

Sulantay started coaching in 1976. He managed both Coquimbo Unido and Deportes La Serena for many years. These were two of his hometown clubs.

Success with Cobreloa

In 1992, Sulantay led the club Cobreloa to win the Primera División de Chile title. This was a major achievement for him as a coach.

Coaching Chile's Youth Teams

From 2003 to 2007, Sulantay coached Chile's youth national teams. He worked with the U17 and U20 squads.

2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup

During the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, his team performed very well. They reached third place in the tournament. This was a big success for Chilean youth football.

There was an incident on June 20, 2007, involving the Chilean team and Canadian police. The players tried to meet fans, and a conflict happened. Even the president of the Chilean Football Association, Harold Mayne-Nicholls, was involved. This event caused concern and was discussed by the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, and FIFA president Joseph Blatter.

After the U20 team's great performance, many thought Sulantay would become the coach of the main adult national team. However, he decided not to take the job.

Later Coaching Roles

In 2008, Sulantay coached Municipal Iquique in the Primera B league. He later returned to coach Coquimbo Unido in 2010. In 2017, he went back to coach Cobreloa again.

Coaching Style

José Sulantay once said about his coaching style:

"I am a follower of Rinus Michels".

Rinus Michels was a famous Dutch coach known for his "Total Football" style. This means players can switch positions easily during a game.

Political Involvement

In 2012, José Sulantay ran for mayor of his hometown, Coquimbo. He ran as an independent candidate. He had support from a conservative political party called the Independent Democratic Union (UDI). However, he did not win the election. Cristian Galleguillos won with 45.6% of the votes, while Sulantay came in second with 27.5%.
