José de Carabantes facts for kids
José de Carabantes (born in Aragon, Spain, in 1628 – died in 1694) was a Spanish Capuchin friar and a religious scholar. He was known for his work in sharing Christian beliefs with Native American people in parts of America ruled by Spain.
His Writings
José de Carabantes wrote books to help missionaries, who were people traveling to spread their religion. One of his important works was called "Ars addicendi atque docendi idiomata." This title means "The Art of Learning and Teaching Languages." He also wrote a "Lexicon, seu vocabularium verborum, adverbiorum, etc." This was like a dictionary or vocabulary guide. Both books were published in Madrid in 1678 and were very useful for missionaries learning new languages to communicate with local people.
