Josep Benet i Morell (born April 14, 1920, in Cervera; died March 24, 2008, in Sant Cugat del Vallès) was an important Catalan politician, historian, and publisher. From a young age, he was involved in the Catalan nationalist movement, which aimed to strengthen Catalonia's identity and rights. He was also part of the Federation of Young Christians of Catalonia.

Early Life and Ideas
Josep Benet studied at the famous Escolania de Montserrat, a special school known for its choir. Even when he was very young, he became involved in groups that supported Catalan culture and identity. He believed strongly in the importance of Catalonia's unique history and language.
Helping Catalonia Gain Self-Rule
Josep Benet became one of the most important figures in Catalan politics during the 20th century. After a long period when Catalonia had little self-rule, Spain began to change. As a parliamentarian (a member of parliament), Josep Benet played a key role. He was part of a special group called the Committee of Twenty. This committee helped write the first draft of the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia of 1979. This important document set out the rules for how Catalonia would govern itself, giving it more control over its own affairs.
