Josep María Armengol Carrera (born in Barcelona on July 4, 1977) is a Spanish expert who studies literature. He is known for his research on gender and what it means to be a man.

About Josep M. Armengol

Josep M. Armengol earned his university degrees, including a PhD in English, from the University of Barcelona in 2006. His PhD paper was the first in Spain to look at how men are shown in books and culture.

In 2007, he moved to the Stony Brook University in the USA. There, he did more advanced research with Dr. Michael Kimmel.

Later, he joined the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha. Since 2012, he has been a professor there. He teaches about gender studies and American literature.

Research on Masculinity

Josep Armengol's work often focuses on how men are shown in stories. For example, he studied how race was important in James Baldwin's book Giovanni’s Room. This book was usually seen as being about being gay, but Armengol showed that race was also a key part of the story.

In 2018, he became the main researcher for the MASCAGE project. This project looks at how men and aging are shown in European books and movies. It gets funding from the European Union.

Armengol is also an editor for the international magazine Men and Masculinities. He helps publish books in the "Masculinity Studies" series. He is known as an important expert in studying "Hegemonic Masculinity" (which means the most common or powerful idea of what a man should be) and "alternative" masculinities (other ways of being a man). His research has been published in many international journals. Since 2020, he has been a member of the Global Young Academy.

Books and Edited Works

Josep M. Armengol has edited several books. These include Debating Masculinity (2008), Alternative Masculinities for a Changing World (2014), and Masculinities and Literary Studies (2017).

He has also written his own books. His book Richard Ford and the Fiction of Masculinities won an award in 2010. Another book, Masculinities in Black and White, also received an award in 2014.
