What He Does
Josep M. Armengol earned his university degrees, including a PhD, in English from the University of Barcelona in 2006. His PhD was the first in Spain to look at how men are shown in stories and culture.
In 2007, he went to the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook University in the USA. There, he did more research with another expert, Dr. Michael Kimmel.
Later, he started working at the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha. Since 2012, he has been a professor there, teaching about how gender is shown in literature, especially American literature.
His Research on Masculinity
One important part of his work looks at how African-American men are shown in books. For example, he studied James Baldwin's book Giovanni’s Room. People often thought this book was mostly about being gay, but Armengol showed that it also had a lot to say about race and what it means to be a Black man.
In 2016, he received a special scholarship called Fulbright-SAAS to continue his research in the USA. In 2018, he became the leader of a big project called MASCAGE. This project studies how men and aging are shown in books and movies from different parts of Europe. The European Union helped fund this important work.
Armengol is also an editor for an international magazine called Men and Masculinities. He also helps edit a series of books about "Masculinity Studies" for a publisher called Peter Lang. He is known as a top expert in understanding different ways of being a man, including what is sometimes called "Hegemonic Masculinity" (which means the most common or powerful idea of what a man should be) and "alternative" masculinities (which are other ways of being a man that might not be as common). His research has been published in many well-known international journals. Since 2020, he has been a member of the Global Young Academy, a group of young scientists and scholars from around the world.
Books He Has Written or Edited
Josep M. Armengol has edited several important books. These include Debating Masculinity (2008), Alternative Masculinities for a Changing World (2014), and Masculinities and Literary Studies (2017).
He has also written his own books. One of them, Richard Ford and the Fiction of Masculinities, won an award in 2010. Another book he wrote, Masculinities in Black and White, also won an award in 2014. These books explore how different ideas of manhood are presented in literature.
