Josep Maria Corredor (born June 3, 1912 – died September 29, 1981) was a talented writer, translator, and teacher from Catalonia, a region in Spain. He was also a cultural activist, meaning he worked hard to promote and protect his culture and language.

Early Life and Education

Josep Maria Corredor was born in Girona, Spain, on June 3, 1912. He was the youngest of three sons. As a young man, he became interested in the new ideas and movements happening in his city. He started writing for local newspapers.

He first studied to become a school teacher in Girona. Later, he moved to Madrid and then Barcelona to study philosophy, which is the study of knowledge and existence.

War, Exile, and New Beginnings

In 1936, a big conflict called the Spanish Civil War began. Josep Maria had to stop his studies and join the army. When the war ended, his side, the republicans, lost. This meant he had to leave Spain.

He went to live in Montpellier, France, where he finished his university studies. After World War II ended, he settled in Perpignan, a French city close to Catalonia. There, he got married and had a daughter.

A Champion of Culture

In Perpignan, Josep Maria Corredor became very active in promoting Catalan culture. He met many important Catalans who were also living in exile, like the famous cellist Pablo Casals. Corredor became Casals's personal secretary.

Their close friendship led to a book in 1955 called Conversations with Pablo Casals. This book shared Casals's memories and thoughts. It was very popular and was translated into many languages.

Josep Maria Corredor also helped start an international effort to build a tomb for the Spanish poet Antonio Machado in Collioure, France. This showed his dedication to honoring important cultural figures.

In the 1960s, he started writing for Catalan newspapers again. After the death of the dictator Francisco Franco, who had ruled Spain for many years, Corredor returned to Girona.
