Josep Maria Moline (born January 25, 1819 – died 1883) was a talented composer from Catalonia, a region in Spain. He wrote music and directed orchestras during his life.

Josep Maria Moline was born in the city of Barcelona. He learned to compose music from Ramon Aleix i Batlle. Ramon was the choirmaster at the Santa Maria del Mar church. Josep also studied the violin with Francesco Beroni. Francesco was the director of the Santa Cruz Theatre in Barcelona.

Moline traveled to Cuba as a violinist. When he returned to Barcelona, he became an orchestra director. From 1858 to 1866, he directed the orchestra for concerts by Josep Anselm Clavé. He also led the Societat Coral Barcino, which was a choral society.

His Musical Journey

Josep Maria Moline played in many music groups. When he was just 14, he joined the Orchestra of the Grand-Théâtre in Marseille. He also played in the Gran Teatro de La Habana in Cuba. Later, he was part of the Philharmonic Society of Saint Cecilia.

He wrote and directed a special church music piece called a mass. This was performed at La Matanza church. When he came back to Barcelona, he worked at the famous Liceu theatre. There, he directed several operas and performed as a solo violinist.

Important Moments

  • In 1862, he directed a special concert. It featured parts of the opera Tannhäuser. Many groups performed together, including the Euterpe Choir and the Liceu women musicians.
  • He helped prepare a concert for Queen Elizabeth II. This event included the Montserrat hearts and the Cobla Empordanesa band.
  • His last concert with the Euterpe orchestra was in 1866. This happened when the concert location changed.
  • Moline was a judge and orchestra director at choral festivals. These festivals took place in 1862 and 1864.
