Life of J.V. Foix
Josep Vicenç Foix was born in a part of Barcelona called Sarrià, Barcelona. His father was a baker. Foix started studying law at university. However, he left after his second year. He then began working in his family's bakery business.
While working, he spent a lot of time reading classic books. He enjoyed works by famous writers like Lord Byron, Dante Alighieri, and Charles Baudelaire. Foix always stayed connected to his hometown. He also helped bring new and modern art ideas, known as avant-garde, to Catalonia.
Foix's Early Work
In 1916, Foix started writing for a magazine called La Revista. This is when he became very interested in avant-garde art. He also worked for other publications. These included Trossos and La Cònsola (from 1919 to 1920). He also worked as an art director for La Publicitat (from 1923 to 1936).
After the Spanish Civil War
After the Spanish Civil War ended, Foix went back to his family's bakery. He was less active in the art world for a while. During this time, he collected all his poems into one big work. He also helped guide young artists. Many of these artists were interested in the avant-garde style, like Joan Brossa.
Growing Popularity
On May 25, 1962, Foix became a member of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans. This is a very important group for Catalan studies. His fame grew even more thanks to the singer Joan Manuel Serrat. Serrat adapted one of Foix's poems into a popular song called És quan dormo que hi veig clar.
Awards and Recognition
Foix received many important awards during his life. In 1981, he won the Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Catalonia. This is a very high honor. In 1984, he received the Catalan Literary Lifetime Achievement Award. Also in 1984, the Parliament of Catalonia suggested him for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
In 1985, J. V. Foix helped restart a student group. It was called the Federació Nacional d'Estudiants de Catalunya (FNEC). He was named its Honorary President.
Foix passed away in 1987. He was buried in Sarrià, the place where he was born. His personal collection of books is now kept at the Biblioteca de Catalunya.
