Joseph Clarke's Artistic Journey
Joseph Clarke created many important artworks during his life. One of his most famous paintings is the 1880 oil painting called 'Panorama of Brisbane from Bowen Terrace'. This painting showed a wide view of the city of Brisbane.
He also drew many pictures for newspapers and magazines. He was especially known for the front pages and title illustrations he made for The Queenslander journal. He worked on these from 1873 to 1880. He also drew for 'Bobby' Byrne's weekly paper, the Queensland Figaro.
Early Life and Training
We do not know much about Joseph Clarke's early life. He was born in England in 1844. His parents were John Clark and Mary Shell.
He moved to Brisbane, Australia, from India around 1870. Before coming to Australia, he studied art at the Department of Science and Art in South Kensington, England. He also taught at the Bombay School of Design in India.
An Artist and Teacher in Queensland
When Joseph Clarke arrived in Queensland, he quickly became a very important artist. He was also an art critic, which means he wrote about and judged art. He was a popular art teacher too.
He taught at the Brisbane School of Art. Later, he became a 'Drawing Master' at the Brisbane Girls Grammar School. This meant he was in charge of teaching drawing there. He was also a member of the Board of General Education. This group helped manage schools before the Department of Public Instruction was created. In 1872, he joined the North Brisbane School of Arts.
Club Memberships
Joseph Clarke was one of the people who helped start the Johnsonian Club in Brisbane. This was a social club for men who were interested in literature and the arts. Another person who helped start the club was Horace Earle. Horace Earle had also taught in India, just like Joseph Clarke.
