What the House Looks Like
The Joseph Campau House has two floors. The front of the house is very even, with three sections. The front is covered with smooth, flat wooden boards. The other three sides have overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.
A porch was added to the front of the house in the 1900s. The outside of the house is quite simple. The only decorations are a special window above the middle of the second floor and a flat board under the roof's edge.
Why This House is Important
This house is one of the oldest homes in Detroit. Even though Joseph Campau himself never lived here, the house was built on land that once belonged to his family. This land was part of a large farm given to Joseph Campau's grandfather way back in 1734.
Joseph Campau was a very important person in Detroit in the early 1800s. He was one of the wealthiest landowners in the city. He made a lot of money from his real estate businesses.
