Joseph Clinton Devillis (sometimes called De Villis) was an amazing African American artist from Brooklyn, New York. He lived from 1878 to 1912. Joseph was known for painting beautiful landscapes, which are pictures of nature like mountains and forests. He also painted seascapes, which are pictures of the ocean.

Exploring Art and Serving His Country

Joseph Devillis joined the United States Navy in 1894. He even brought his drawing pads and pencils with him! While visiting Europe, he used his time off from the ship to study famous artworks. He saw masterpieces in the Louvre and Luxembourg museums in Paris, France. He also visited art galleries in London, England.

In 1898, Joseph was a signal man on the USS Olympia. This ship was part of Admiral Dewey's fleet. He bravely served during the Battle of Manila Bay. This was a big naval battle that happened in the Philippines.

Returning to Art and Education

Studying Art in New York

In 1901, Joseph left the Navy. He returned to New York City. At that time, there were not many African American art students in New York. Joseph was one of the few. He decided to continue his art education.

From 1907 to 1912, he studied at Adelphi College. While there, he joined the Adelphi Sketch Club. This club was a place where students could practice drawing and share their art.

Community and Legacy

A Life of Faith and Art

Besides his art, Joseph Devillis was also very active in his community. He was a member of the Nazarene Congregational Church in Brooklyn. He served as a Deacon and the Treasurer for his church.

Sadly, Joseph passed away in 1912 from pneumonia. He was only 33 years old. Even after his death, his art continued to be recognized. In 1921, his paintings were shown at the New York Public Library. His work became part of the important A.A. Schomburg Collection there.
