Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Joseph Grozer (1755–1799) was a talented English artist and printmaker. A printmaker is someone who creates pictures by carving designs into metal or wood, then using ink to press the design onto paper. He lived in London and made many beautiful prints, often based on paintings by famous artists of his time.

What Kind of Art Did Grozer Make?

Grozer was especially skilled at a type of printmaking called mezzotint. This technique allows artists to create prints with very smooth, soft shades, almost like a photograph. He often made prints from paintings by famous artists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and George Romney.

Famous Mezzotint Prints

Some of Grozer's early mezzotint prints included The Young Shepherdess, made in 1784, and The Theory of Design, from 1785. Both of these were based on paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds.

He also created mezzotints of many important people, like:

  • Master Braddyll and Lord Loughborough, after paintings by Reynolds.
  • James, Earl of Cardigan and Abraham Newland, after paintings by Romney.
  • Scenes of everyday life, such as Morning, or the Benevolent Sportsman and Evening, or the Sportsman's Return, after paintings by George Morland.
  • Portraits of royalty, like The Duke and Duchess of York, after a painting by Henry Singleton.

Stipple Engravings

Besides mezzotint, Grozer sometimes used another printmaking method called stipple engraving. This technique uses tiny dots to create images and shading. One famous stipple engraving he made was Sophia, Lady St. Asaph, after a painting by Reynolds.

The Age of Innocence

One of Grozer's most famous contributions was giving the name The Age of Innocence to his stipple engraving of a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds. The original painting was simply called A Little Girl. Grozer's print became incredibly popular with the public. It showed the sweet, innocent side of childhood and was reproduced countless times on many different items.
