Joseph H. Jefferson, born on May 31, 1947, was an important leader in South Carolina. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives for many years, from 2004 to 2024. He was a member of the Democratic Party.
Early Life and Education
Joseph H. Jefferson was born on May 31, 1947. His parents were Joseph H. and Omega T. Jefferson. He went to St. Stephens High School and then continued his education at Claflin University. In 1970, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Claflin University. Later, in 1999, Mr. Jefferson also studied at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Magistrate School. On May 30, 1970, he married Deloris Livingston. They had three children: Trena Mack, Marva Patterson, and Joseph III.
A Career in Public Service
Joseph H. Jefferson dedicated many years to public service. From 1972 to 1980, he worked as a special assistant for Congressman Mendel Jackson Davis. He also led the Berkeley County School Board as its Chairman. From 1994 to 1998, he represented the Sixth Congressional District on the South Carolina Department of Transportation Commission. For 32 years, Mr. Jefferson served as a Magistrate Judge for Berkeley County. This role meant he handled many local legal matters.
Serving in the House of Representatives
Mr. Jefferson was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2004. He represented the 102nd District. He served in this important role for two decades, until 2024. During his time in the House, he was the 2nd Vice Chair of the House Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee. This committee works on laws related to jobs, businesses, and different industries in the state.
