History of the Stoner House

Early Owners and Recognition

The Joseph J. Stoner House has a long and interesting past. In 1865, a family named Joseph and Harriet Stoner bought the house. They lived there for many years, making it their home.

Later, in 1972, the Madison Landmarks Commission recognized the house as an important landmark. This means it was officially noted as a significant building in the city of Madison.

Moving and Restoring the House

In 1983, something big happened to the house. It was given as a gift to the Wisconsin Architects Foundation by Madison Newspapers. This foundation helps preserve and teach about architecture.

The foundation decided to move the house to a slightly different spot, about 100 feet away. They also worked hard to fix it up, making sure it looked great and was safe for the future. This big project cost more than $200,000, showing how much care went into preserving this historic building.
