Joseph Ladd Neal (born in 1867) was an American architect. He was known for designing many interesting buildings. He created structures in popular styles like Richardsonian Romanesque, Shingle Style, and Colonial Revival. These styles made his buildings look unique and often very grand.

Early Life and Training

Joseph Ladd Neal was born in Wiscasset, Maine, in 1867. His father was a merchant who sold hardware. Joseph learned about architecture by working with famous architects of his time.

He trained with Charles Howard Walker in Boston, Massachusetts. He also gained valuable experience working for well-known architecture firms. These included Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge in Boston. He also worked with James Renwick Jr. in New York City.

Building a Career in Pittsburgh

Around 1892, Joseph Neal moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He decided to start his own architecture business there. He often worked with other talented architects on projects.

In 1893, he formed a partnership with S. Alfred Hopkins. This collaboration lasted for about a year. Later, from 1902 to 1906, he worked with George M. Rowland. These partnerships helped him create many impressive designs.

Notable Architectural Designs

Joseph Neal designed many important buildings throughout his career. Some of his works are so special that they are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list recognizes buildings that are important to American history and culture.

Four of his designs received this special honor. These include the Lithgow Public Library and the Merrill Memorial Library. The College Hill Station and the Small Point Club are also on this important list.
