Joseph P. Newmark (born 1827) was an important businessman. He came from Prussia and helped Los Angeles, California, grow. He started a clothing store called Rich & Newmark with Jacob Rich. Later, he opened another store, Newmark, Kremer & Co. This store sold many different goods.
Early Life and Moving to America
Joseph Newmark was born in a place called Löbau in Prussia. Today, this area is known as Lubawa, Poland. He moved to the United States in 1848. By 1852, he was living in Los Angeles.
Starting Businesses in Los Angeles
Joseph asked his younger brother, Harris, to come to America. Harris joined Joseph's business. Their uncle, Joseph Newmark, and Maurice Kremer also joined the dry goods store. Harris soon left to start his own businesses in the area.
Later Life and Retirement
Joseph Newmark also left the partnership. He moved to San Francisco. There, he became a merchandise broker. This means he helped buy and sell goods for others. After he retired in 1888, he moved back to Los Angeles.
