Sir Joseph Ernest Petavel (born August 14, 1873 – died March 31, 1936) was a brilliant British scientist known for his work in physics. He held important titles like Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) and was a Fellow of the Royal Society, which means he was a very respected scientist.

Early Life and Education

Joseph Petavel was born in London, England. He studied in Lausanne and Geneva before joining University College London in 1893. There, he focused on mechanical and electrical engineering, learning how machines work and how electricity behaves. His hard work paid off, and in 1907, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a special honor given to top scientists in the United Kingdom.

A Leader in Science

Sir Joseph Petavel became the second director of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Bushy Park. This laboratory is a very important place where scientists and engineers do research and set standards for measurements. He led the NPL from 1919 until 1936. During his time there, he lived in Bushy House, a historic building on the NPL campus.

The Petavel Gauge

One of Sir Joseph's notable inventions was the Petavel gauge. This special device was designed to measure the pressure inside exploding gases. Imagine trying to figure out how much force is created when something like gunpowder explodes – the Petavel gauge helped scientists do just that! This invention was very important for understanding how different materials behave under extreme pressure.

Honored for His Work

In 1920, Sir Joseph Petavel was given a special award. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE). This honor was given to him for his important work during wartime. He served as the Chairman of the Aerodynamics Sub-Committee of the Advisory Committee on Aeronautics. This means he helped guide research on how things fly, which was crucial for developing aircraft during that time.

Later Life

Sir Joseph Petavel passed away on March 31, 1936, at Bushy House. He was buried in Highgate Cemetery, a famous cemetery in London. His contributions to physics and his leadership at the National Physical Laboratory left a lasting impact on science.
