Joseph Whitley (born October 17, 1816 – died January 12, 1891) was an English engineer. He was known for his work with machines and metals. Joseph Whitley is famous for appearing in the very first known film.

This film is called Roundhay Garden Scene. It was made by his son-in-law, Louis Le Prince. In the film, you can see Joseph Whitley walking with his wife, Sarah. He is the man whose coat seems to fly as he moves!

About Joseph Whitley

Joseph Whitley was born in Wakefield, England. He worked as a mechanical engineer, which means he designed and built machines. He was also a metallurgist, someone who studies and works with metals.

He married Sarah Robinson in 1842. They had three children together. His daughter, Harriet, married the inventor Louis Le Prince.

Appearing in the First Film

The Roundhay Garden Scene is a very short film. It was filmed in 1888, making it the earliest known film ever made. Joseph Whitley was one of the few people who appeared in this historic movie.

He died on January 12, 1891, in New York City.
