José Matías Zapiola (born March 22, 1780 – died June 27, 1874) was an important military leader from Argentina. He became a brigadier, which is a high rank in the army. He played a part in Argentina's fight for independence.

Zapiola was born in Buenos Aires on March 22, 1780. When he was younger, he moved to Spain. Later, in 1812, he returned to his home country. He came back with José de San Martín, who was a very famous general.

Early Battles

From 1812 to 1814, Zapiola took part in the siege of Montevideo. This was a long fight to take control of the city. He also fought in two major battles that helped secure independence.

In 1817, Zapiola fought in the Battle of Chacabuco. This battle was a big win for the independence forces. The next year, in 1818, he also fought in the Battle of Maipu. This battle was another crucial victory. These battles were very important for the freedom of Argentina and Chile.

Later Life and Retirement

Zapiola retired from the military in 1829. However, he continued to serve his country in other ways. In 1859, he became the Minister of War for Buenos Aires. This shows he was still trusted and respected.

He lived a very long life. José Matías Zapiola was likely one of the last soldiers alive who fought in the Argentine War of Independence. He passed away on June 27, 1874.
