The Life of a Comic Creator
Starting Out in Comics
José Sanchis Grau was born in Valencia. He began drawing professionally when he was just 16 years old, in 1948. His first regular character was El soldadito Pepe, which appeared in the magazine Jaimito.
Even after an accident in 1950, he kept drawing. He created more characters for magazines and newspapers in Valencia. Some of his early comic series included El Machote, El Recluta Policarpo, and Pandolfito Cebollínez.
Creating Famous Characters
In 1954, Sanchis Grau introduced his most famous character, the cat Pumby. Pumby quickly became a huge hit with young readers. The comic appeared in Jaimito magazine.
Because Pumby was so popular, a new magazine named after the character, Pumby, was launched in 1955. This magazine published over a thousand issues! Later, in 1959, Super Pumby also appeared.
During this time, Sanchis Grau also created other funny comic series. These included Marilín y la moda for a women's magazine and El Capitán Mostachete for Jaimito. He worked for Editorial Valenciana for many years.
In 1972, he created another popular character, Robín Robot. This robot's adventures were published in the magazine Zipi y Zape by Editorial Bruguera.
Later Career and Character Rights
After his main publisher closed, José Sanchis Grau continued his work. He faced some challenges to get the rights to his own characters. Eventually, after a legal process, he won back the rights to his creations. This meant he could control how his characters were used. He also received recognition for the unfair use of his work by others.
