Juan Galván Jiménez (born November 19, 1596 – died 1658) was a Spanish painter. He is also sometimes known as Juan Galbán. He was born in a town called Luesia, which was part of the kingdom of Aragon in Spain.

Who Was Juan Galván?

Juan Galván was a talented artist from Spain. He is known for his beautiful paintings, especially those found in churches. He lived during the 1600s, a time when art was very important in Spain.

Early Life and Training

Galván wanted to become a better painter. So, he traveled to Rome, Italy, to study art. Rome was a very important city for artists at that time. He stayed there for some time to learn new techniques.

Returning to Spain

In 1624, Juan Galván returned to Spain. He settled in a city called Zaragoza. Here, he became a well-known artist. The city's main government group, known as the Corporation, officially named him a painter. This was a big honor!

Famous Works and Locations

Juan Galván created many important paintings in Zaragoza. Some of his works can still be seen in famous buildings there.

  • La Seo Cathedral: For this large cathedral, he painted scenes like the Nativity (the birth of Jesus). He also painted pictures of Santa Justa and Santa Rufina, who were two important saints. People admired his use of colors in these large artworks.
  • Discalced Carmelites Convent: He also painted for the Barefooted Carmelites, a religious group. One of his main works for them was a painting of the Trinity (God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). His most famous painting was the Birth of the Virgin.
  • Santa Justa y Rufina: He painted the inside of the dome (the rounded roof) of the Santa Justa y Rufina church.

Juan Galván continued to paint in Zaragoza until he passed away in 1658.
