Juan de Aragón y de Jonqueras was an important Spanish nobleman and leader. He was born on March 27, 1457, in Spain, and passed away on July 5, 1528, in Monzón, Spain.

Juan held powerful positions during his life. He was the Count of Ribagorza, a title of nobility. He also served as a Viceroy, which means he was a ruler representing the king in a specific area. He was the Viceroy of Catalonia from 1496 to 1501. Later, he became the Viceroy of Naples from 1507 to 1509.

Early Life and Family Connections

Juan de Aragón y de Jonqueras was born in Benabarre. He was the son of Alfonso VI de Ribagorza. Alfonso himself was a son of King John II of Aragón. This made Juan a grand-nephew of King John II.

Juan was also a nephew of Ferdinand II of Aragón, who was a very powerful king. King Ferdinand II ruled from 1479 to 1516. Being related to such important kings helped Juan rise in power.

Marriage and Later Life

In 1479, Juan de Aragón married María López de Gurrea y Torrellas. She was a wealthy landowner. They had a son named Alfonso VII de Ribagorza, who was born in 1487.

After his wife María passed away in 1492, Juan joined a special group. He became a member of the Order of Saint John. This was a religious and military order.

Serving as Viceroy

Juan de Aragón was chosen to lead the effort to take back the Kingdom of Naples. He replaced Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, who had been in charge there since 1495. Juan was likely a trusted person who worked closely with Gonzalo in Italy.

While he was Viceroy of Naples, Juan faced a difficult situation. In June 1508, there was a revolt by the people. This happened because there wasn't enough food, like flour and wheat. Juan was also trying to collect more money for the army. In October 1509, he had to leave Naples. Another leader, Antonio de Guevara, took over as interim viceroy.

Political Roles in Catalonia

In 1512, Juan de Aragón was given another important job. He was appointed President of the Generalitat of Catalunya. This was a high position in the government of Catalonia.

However, he had to leave this post in June 1514. It seems there were rules that limited who could be appointed. For a while, only leaders from the Catholic Church could hold such positions.

His Final Resting Place

Juan de Aragón y de Jonqueras passed away in 1528. He was buried in June 1528 at the Monastery of Montserrat. This is a famous and historic monastery in Catalonia, Spain.
